This is my commentary and below is the alert from the NRA-ILA about AB2714 and SB59 that is going to the governor's desk next week. AB2714 requires proof of identification and age before you can buy ammunition. I am all for gun owner's rights but I don't neccesarily think this law is bad for what it's trying to do BUT it violates certain rights we have as California state residents and the rights that local governments have within the state and THAT is what I have a problem with. Personally though I don't think that minors should be able to buy ammunition and for that matter if you aren't a responsible enough citizen to have a drivers license than you shouldn't be allowed to be buying ammunition. 

As for SB59 that is also on it's way to the governor's desk I just think it is bullshit. By redefining what is or isn't a firearm it will more easily allow them to ban more firearms in the state.

AB2714, sponsored by Assembly Member Alberto Torrico (D-20), is on the way to the desk of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). This legislation would require that no ammunition (or reloaded ammunition) may be sold in a retail transaction unless the purchaser personally presents evidence of his or her identity and age, as specified, to the seller of the ammunition. Additionally, it would severely undermine California's state preemption law.

Senate Bill 59 is also on the way to the Governor's desk.  Sponsored by Senator Alan Lowenthal (D-27), SB59 would expand the definition of the term "firearm" to include the frame or receiver of the gun for purposes of the offense of failure to report a stolen or lost firearm.  This bill would make it a crime for any person whose handgun is stolen or irretrievably lost to not report the theft or loss to a local law enforcement agency within 5 working days after his or her discovery of the theft or loss; or within 5 working days after the date he or she should have reasonably known of the theft or loss.  SB59 will also provide that local governments are not prohibited from enacting ordinances imposing reporting requirements that are more strict than those specified in the bill.  Please contact Governor Schwarzenegger today at (916)-445-2841, by fax at (916) 445-4633, and e-mail by visiting www.govmail.ca.gov/, to urge him to protect your Second Amendment freedom by vetoing AB2714 and SB59.
